Sheema: Residents of Kashenyi cell, Kyamuraari ward in Bugongi town council Sheema district were engulfed in shock  on Sunday after a Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier at the rank of Captain shot his nephew dead after accusing him of allegedly stealing his cow dung.

SP Scovia Birungi, the Sheema District Police Commandant, told this website that Captain Peter Mbweebwe, who is attached to Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) in Bwindi Impenetrable National park, on Sunday night at around 8:00Pm, shot his nephew Winston Mugizi,38, dead, using an AK-47 gun.

Mbweebwe accused the deceased of unlawfully taking cow dung from his kraal.

“The information we have so far indicates that Captain Mbweebwe’s cows have been destroying Mugizi’s  plantations and that he had told Mweebwe to fence his farm such that the cows stop destroying his plantations, although the latter refused.”

She added that “It is alleged that when the Captain refused to fence his farm,  Mugizi decided to get a heap of cow dung from  Mweebwe’s farm  and take it to his plantations without the latter’s permission. So yesterday at around 8:00Pm in Omukabaare trading Centre, in Bugongi village, Captain  Mweebwe and Mugizi, who are alleged  to have been drunk,  quarreled over the cow dung, which forced the Captain to shoot Mugizi in the chest, killing him instantly.”

DPC Birungi revealed that Sheema Central police led by her and CID Charles Tukahiirwa later arrested Mweebwe,  and that he will be arraigned in court to face charges  of murder when investigations are completed.

She later  declared a full time curfew on Omukabaare trading Centre until further notice, saying that Police has for long been fighting with people from Kyamuraari, who drink alcohol like porridge from morning till evening and breach all Ministry of Health Guidelines aimed at fighting the spread of COVID-19, including not wearing masks and maintaining social distance.
