Villarreal has improved under the stewardship of former Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain manager Unai Emery. The Yellow Submarine are a well-balanced team and have several promising young prospects – such as Nigerian star Samuel Chukwueze, Takefusa Kubo, Yeremi Pino and Fer Nino – balanced out with reliable veterans Carlos Bacca, Dani Parejo and Raul Albiol.

Emery is hoping to get even more out of the likes of Chukwueze and Kubo, though: “We need the experience that some players accumulate to translate into improvement. We need Samu to settle after two years of irregularity in the first team. We need him to make the difference and this year he’s doing it to a lesser extent [than before].

“When Take plays, we need him to finish his plays in the final third and contribute a goal. The day he can contribute that we will have taken a step forward. We set the level high because there are many players with high ability, and I want to help the younger players find that level of performance.”

Granada, meanwhile, has been one of the surprise packages in Spanish football over the past two seasons. They boast some notable African talent in Kingsley Fobi, Ramaon Azeez and Yan Brice Eteki, but their mainstays are veteran attackers Roberto Soldado and Jorge Molina, who have a combined age of 73!

“We have to continue in our line of performance, my day today has been the same for the two and a half years that I’ve been here,” said Granada coach Diego Martinez. “That competition will always be there. We want to keep improving our version, keep growing as a team and match our opponents in energy and intensity.”

The midweek La Liga action also features Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid away to Eibar at Estadio Municipal de Ipurua; Real Valladolid tackling Elche in a relegation six-pointer; and Sevilla looking to continue their rise with a win away to Deportivo Alaves at Estadio de Mendizorroza.

No rival can compete with SuperSport’s coverage. Our viewers on DStv and GOtv can see all their favourite stars from the African continent dominating La Liga pitches across Spain.
