The international diplomatic community was jolted on Monday evening after South Africa’s ambassador to France, Nathi Mthethwa, 58, was found dead under mysterious circumstances outside the Hyatt Hotel in central Paris.

According to French daily Le Parisien, Mthethwa’s wife raised the alarm after receiving a “disturbing message” from him earlier in the evening. Police launched an immediate search and later discovered his body near the hotel.

The cause of death has not yet been confirmed. French authorities say investigations are underway as they probe the events that preceded the ambassador’s sudden demise.

South Africa’s Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation acknowledged the reports, noting it was awaiting official details from French authorities before issuing a comprehensive statement.

Mthethwa, who was appointed ambassador in February 2024, had served less than a year in the role. Despite his brief tenure, he was credited with strengthening bilateral ties, advancing trade relations, and deepening cultural and political cooperation between Pretoria and Paris.

News of his death has sent shockwaves through both South African and Parisian diplomatic circles. Colleagues and officials expressed condolences to the family, while calling for a thorough investigation to clarify the circumstances.

As questions mount, authorities are expected to release further updates in the coming days. For now, the sudden loss of Ambassador Mthethwa remains a mystery that has unsettled the heart of Paris and cast a shadow over South Africa’s diplomatic corps
