In a commanding show of political strength, the Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among, has been officially declared unopposed for the Bukedea District Woman Member of Parliament seat—cementing her grip on power and securing her return to the 12th Parliament without a single vote being cast.

The nomination, conducted under tight security and amid loud celebrations from hundreds of supporters, saw no rival step forward to challenge her. The Electoral Commission confirmed that Among was the only aspirant to present and submit nomination papers for the race—automatically handing her victory in accordance with the Parliamentary Elections Act.

“Only one candidate—Hon. Anita Annet Among—was nominated and verified. She is, therefore, duly elected unopposed,” a Commission official announced, drawing applause from her jubilant supporters.

The unchallenged nomination is seen by many as a loud endorsement of Among’s political dominance, not just in Bukedea but across the Teso sub-region. Since 2016, she has held the Bukedea Woman MP seat, rising swiftly to become Speaker of the 11th Parliament in 2022—one of Uganda’s most powerful positions.

Locals flooded the streets waving placards reading “Mama Anita, Our Hope” and “Development First!”, pointing to her achievements in the district: electricity rollouts, improved healthcare, school construction, and strong support for women and youth empowerment initiatives.

“We trust Mama Anita. She’s delivered where others only promised,” said Margaret Akol of Kachumbala. “We saw no reason to change what’s already working.”

Political analysts say this unopposed victory is both a reflection of her popularity and the impenetrable political machine she has built around Bukedea. “She’s not just a candidate—she’s a political fortress. Challenging her is political suicide here,” noted commentator Julius Omona.

With no need to campaign or debate challengers, Among can now fully focus on her national legislative responsibilities and shaping her broader political legacy—an opportunity few in Uganda’s political landscape enjoy.

This move also means that Bukedea will not hold elections for its Woman MP seat in the upcoming general cycle, a rarity in competitive politics and a testament to the Speaker’s entrenched influence.

Her political star continues to rise—uncontested, unshaken, and now, officially re-elected.
