Speaker of Parliament Anita Among is set to lead a high-level Ugandan delegation to Vatican City this week to attend the burial of Pope Francis. The visit follows the unexpected passing of the Holy Father, who was widely regarded as a global symbol of peace, humility, and religious tolerance.

President Yoweri Museveni has entrusted Speaker Among with the responsibility of representing Uganda at this solemn and historic event, underscoring the strong and longstanding ties between Uganda and the Holy See.

The Vatican has enjoyed enduring diplomatic relations with Uganda, especially given the country’s significant Catholic population and the legacy of the Uganda Martyrs, who hold a revered place in the history of both the Church and the nation.

According to parliamentary sources, the delegation will include several Members of Parliament, religious leaders, and officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Ugandan delegation will join other global dignitaries and heads of state at St. Peter’s Basilica, where they will pay their final respects to the late pontiff.

Speaker Among, a devout Catholic, is expected to deliver a message of condolence on behalf of President Museveni and the people of Uganda.

Her presence at the funeral highlights Uganda’s recognition of Pope Francis’ moral influence—not only in religious affairs but also in championing social justice, human dignity, and interfaith dialogue.

The burial is expected to attract millions of mourners around the world, and Uganda’s participation affirms the country’s role on the global stage in both religious and diplomatic matters.
