Arua, Uganda: It is so shaming when leaders prey on their innocent subjects! SpyUganda has learnt that the Arua Municipal Council Speaker has been arrested over allegations of defiling a minor.
Speaker Faraj Ramadhan was arrested from his home on Wednesday together with one of the Local council officials only identified as Muhammad. Night Asara, the Chairperson of the Women Caucus and Arua hill LC V councilor, says they developed interest in the matter when Faraj stopped convening council meetings in September last year, the time he is alleged to have committed the crime. Faraj is accused of allegedly defiling a 16-year-old girl, who is a resident of Obolokofuku cell in River Oli division. Faraj was initially summoned to Arua Central Police Station on Tuesday together with the LC I Chairperson of Obolokofuku cell to record a statement but he vanished, prompting the police to launch a hunt for him. It is alleged that Faraj defiled the minor on three different occasions in September last year and impregnated her. On conceiving, she told her aunt, who confronted Faraj and they agreed to settle the matter amicably if he paid Shs2m to cater for the girl.
The LC One Chairperson Obolokofuku cell allegedly mediated the settlement. However, the Women Caucus of Arua, a local organization advocating for the Girl child and fighting Sexual Gender Based Violence-(SGBV) learnt about the saga and informed the police at Arua Central Police Station, which deployed detectives that arrested Faraj. He will be paraded in court to face defilement charges when investigations are completed.
