Kampala: The Rt.Hon Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga has summoned the Prime Minister Rt.Hon Ruhakana Rugunda to come to the house tomorrow, Thursday, April, 8 2021 to explain why the government has not ended the night curfew despite the fact covid-19 now has a vaccine and the death toll reduced.

It should be noted that the government instituted curfew among other standard operating procedures (SOPs) to curb the transmission of deadly coronavirus in the country march last year (2020).

Despite the drastic decline of COVID-19 cases in Uganda, the government has kept silent on the guidance of the existing SOPs, curfew inclusive, which has since left a couple of night bussinesses closed.

But businesses aside, a couple of Ugandans specifically Muslims are worried about the month of Ramathan prayers that involves night movements.

According to outgoing Kawempe MP Al-Hajji Latif Ssebagala Sengendo, the existing curfew will highly affect not only their night prayers known as (Taraweeh) that end late night in the holy month but also will affect many businesses especially restaurants that provide services to Muslims during the time of breaking their fast.

He says, ”Lastly I have noticed curfew has become a money-making tool by security organs since the curfew regulations & enforcement is done selectively. A couple of weeks ago, the Committee of human rights was in Mbarara and we had our late supper at around 11:00 PM, everything was normal, boda-bodas were moving, and people were moving freely.”

It is from this background that the speaker instructed the Prime Minister to come to Parliament, tomorrow, and update the country on demand for a review of the curfew policy.

”MPs and I are concerned about its growing negative impact on the economy; and on the upcoming holy month of Ramadhan which requires nocturnal movement by the faithful,” said Kadaga.
