Stagger At Your Own Risk: Government Bans Essential Workers Without Electronic Travel Permits

By Spy Uganda

Kampala: The government has revealed that essential workers without electronic permits issued by the Ministry of Works and Transport will not be allowed on the roads today.

Unlike last year, when stickers were printed and placed on the vehicle, this time the ministry is issuing electronic travel permits. Thus the essential workers without electronic permits will not be allowed on roads today.

While addressing journalists on Sunday Anderson Burora, the Nakawa deputy RDC said that most of the essential workers who applied for the permits have been approved adding that these will be the only ones allowed on the roads.

‘’Now that the Ministry of Works has issued clearances to certain cars, we wanted to make some clearances on those cars. Those with permits will not be exempt from the curfew deadline,’’ Burora said.

Ministry of Works and Transport last week commenced the issuance of travel permits to the essential works who have been allowed to travel with vehicles during the second national lockdown which started last Friday after the president announced another lockdown to curb the spread of Covid-19.

The groups that are allowed to travel include among others health workers, patients, select government workers as well as people working in key sectors such as banking, utilities and mass communication.

However, the media, health workers and security personnel are the only categories allowed to move beyond the curfew time that was recently pulled back to between 7 pm and 5:30 am.

The president recently pulled the curfew time from 9:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The only categories allowed to move beyond curfew times include the media, health workers, and security personnel.

In the same vein, the Kampala RCC, Hussein Hudu told journalists that the enforcement takes effect today noting that with the new electronic permits, one just presents their particulars to security and their status appears with one message check.

According to the Ministry Of works, over one million people last week applied for electronic travel permits and many of them are still pending, however, they were told to get temporary ones from the RDC’s office for the time being.
