The Engineer for Lwakhakha Town Council in Namisindwa District has been arrested in Kenya after allegedly fleeing the country to evade an accountability inspection into the suspected mismanagement of public funds.
The arrest was carried out on Wednesday morning through a joint security operation involving the State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SH-ACU), the Internal Security Organisation (ISO), the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), the Uganda Police Force (UPF), the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), and other security agencies.
The engineer had reportedly gone into hiding ahead of an accountability inspection over allegations of mismanaging funds allocated for road works in Namisindwa District.
Authorities hailed the operation as a major breakthrough in the ongoing crackdown on corruption within local governments.
Officials commended the participating security agencies for their professionalism, coordination and swift response that led to the suspect’s apprehension across the border.
Despite the latest arrest, security agencies revealed that the search is still ongoing for three other district officials who are wanted in connection with the investigations. These include the Namisindwa District Engineer, the District Commercial Officer and the District Production Officer.
Authorities stressed that no individual is above the law and vowed that all public officials found to have misused taxpayers’ money would be held accountable.
The latest development is part of a wider anti-corruption campaign targeting local governments, with investigators seeking to ensure prudent use of public resources and value for money in the implementation of government projects.
Investigations into the alleged mismanagement of road funds in Namisindwa District are ongoing.
