Kampala: Police in Kampala is still investigating circumstances where a suspected thug was shot dead by Foot patrol police and Local Defence Unit – LDU personnel after he was found strangling Anita Namayanja, a student of Makerere University Business School (MUBS).

Luke Owoyesigyire the Deputy Kampala Metropolitan police spokesman, said that Tonny Kigozi was shot dead at around 11 p.m, from Mutundwe, on the outskirts of Kampala.

Owoyesigyire added that Namayanja was attacked a few meters from her home, moments after she had been dropped off by a motorcyclist. She was on her way home when two men, armed with rudimentary weapons intercepted and started strangling her.

Namayanja was rescued by the intervention of Local Defence Unit personnel who responded to the sound of her alarm and shot one of the two men, who was watching as his colleague, who was later identified as Henry Mutebi muffled the student.

Mutebi also surrendered to the security team and has since been detained at Nateete Police Station. Police also impounded a motorcycle registration number UEY 069W, which the duo was using.

The incident comes on the heels of rampant armed gang raids in the suburbs of Kampala. More than 20 homes and businesses have been raided by armed thugs in the areas of Mutundwe, Kajjansi, Nateete, Kawempe and Lubowa.

The armed raids have forced President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to instruct the Deputy Inspector General of Police Maj Gen Sabiiti Muzeeyi to whip out criminals as swift as possible.
