Kampala: On 14th January 2021, the Republic of Uganda held the elections of Members of Parliament that saw new and old legislators making their way back to the house.
As per the constitutional mandate, the clerk to parliament organized their swearing-in ceremony to be held between 17th and 20th May 2021 at the Parliament of the Republic of Uganda.
This exercise is however expected to disrupt traffic flow in the city thus prompting the Uganda Traffic Police to issue a couple of new guidelines in a bid to have successful celebrations. New guidelines are summarized below;
- Kampala – Jinja Road will have normal traffic flow.
- There will be traffic diversions in areas surrounding Parliament; Parliamentary Avenue will be cut off at Kimathi Avenue, King George VI Street, Siadi Barrie, and UBC Roundabout.
- Members of Parliament Elect will access Parliament via King George VI Street and be dropped off at the Main Gate; motor vehicles proceed to the designated parking at National Theatre.
- Members of Parliament Elect are STRICTLY allowed to use one vehicle.
- After swearing-in, they will proceed to the parking via the Eastern Gate of Parliament opposite the National Theatre and exit through Dewinton Road.
- Motorists unrelated to this function are advised to avoid Kimathi Avenue, Parliamentary Avenue, Siadi Barrie and Dewinton Road.
- Parking along the road or near Parliament is prohibited; any motor vehicle abandoned on the road will be towed to CPS Kampala Parking Yard at the owners’ cost and inconvenience.
Meanwhile, Police says; ”anybody who violates the Traffic Rules and Regulations will be dealt with in accordance with TRSA 1998.”
