Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan has lost her husband, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, who died Monday while receiving treatment at a hospital in Zanzibar.

Hafidh, who had been undergoing treatment for a heart condition, became Tanzania’s First Gentleman in 2021 when his wife assumed the presidency following the death of then-President John Magufuli.

The death was announced by Tanzania’s Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi, who conveyed condolences to the bereaved family and said preparations were underway to bury Hafidh in Zanzibar, the family’s ancestral home.

The announcement has triggered an outpouring of condolences from across the region, with neighbouring leaders mourning the death of a man who largely remained outside the political spotlight while supporting his wife during her years in public service.

Kenyan President William Ruto expressed his condolences to President Samia and the family, describing Hafidh as a lifelong companion to the Tanzanian leader and a beloved father to their children.

“President Samia has lost a lifelong companion, her children a beloved father, and Tanzania a distinguished son,” Ruto said.

Burundi President Evariste Ndayishimiye also sent his condolences to President Samia, the family and the people of Tanzania following the death.

Hafidh and President Samia had four children,  three sons and a daughter, who is a member of Tanzania’s Parliament.

President Samia became Tanzania’s first female president in 2021 after succeeding Magufuli, making her elevation to the presidency a historic moment for the country.

She was re-elected for a second term in the 2025 presidential election, securing more than 97 percent of the vote in a contest that was strongly criticised by opposition groups after major opposition candidates were prevented from participating.

Despite the political developments surrounding her presidency, Hafidh maintained a relatively low public profile and was known primarily as the President’s husband and a member of the First Family.

His death now leaves President Samia and her children mourning at a time when the Tanzanian leader continues to serve as the country’s head of state.

Further details regarding the funeral arrangements and burial in Zanzibar are expected to be announced by the Tanzanian authorities and the family.
