Security authorities in Kitgum District have arrested three individuals accused of attempting to bribe officials during the ongoing Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) recruitment exercise in the Northern Region.

According to Team Six of the regional recruitment team, the suspects were not among the shortlisted candidates for the Kitgum and Lamwo district quotas. They were allegedly caught offering cash to the team leader in an attempt to secure enlistment.

The suspects have been identified as:

  • Okema Samuel, from Kitgum District, found with Shs 200,000

  • Torach Isaac, from Lamwo District, found with Shs 600,000

  • Ocaya Joel, from Lamwo District, found with Shs 100,000

Officials said the trio was immediately handed over to police for further investigation and possible prosecution.

In Kitgum District, a total of 65 candidates were successfully recruited — 59 regular recruits (56 male, three female) and seven professionals. In neighbouring Lamwo District, 27 candidates passed the physical recruitment stage, including 19 male and five female regular recruits, as well as three professionals.

The UPDF has consistently warned against corruption in the recruitment process, stressing that only qualified candidates who meet the set criteria will be considered for service.
