With less than two weeks to the planned enthronement of Prince Edward Kijanangoma Rukidi Nyabongo I, the Tooro Kingdom Empango Organising Committee has unveiled a Shs925 million budget for preparations ahead of the one-day coronation ceremony.
The coronation is scheduled for September 29, 2026, and will formally mark the beginning of the reign of Omukama Edward Kijanangoma Nyabongo I, who was selected by the Babiito royal clan to succeed the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
Isaiah Mayombo, Chairman of the Empango Organising Committee, has appealed to Ugandans and well-wishers to support the preparations by contributing funds and essential items needed for the ceremony.
Mayombo said the organising committee is seeking to raise Shs925 million to facilitate the successful hosting of the Empango, the traditional ceremony associated with the enthronement of a Tooro king.
“We need to raise Shs925 million to successfully run the Empango,” Mayombo said.
He encouraged members of the public to contribute in different ways, noting that support does not have to be limited to cash. According to Mayombo, the organising team is also welcoming donations of cows, water and other essential supplies.
The fundraising comes as preparations intensify for the September 29 ceremony, which is expected to bring together members of the royal family, cultural leaders, government officials, local leaders and other guests.
The enthronement will also usher in a new chapter for the Tooro Kingdom following the death of King Oyo in August.
The new king has since outlined a message centred on unity, education, scholarships, partnerships and continuity of development initiatives associated with the kingdom.
With the coronation date approaching, the organising committee is now focused on mobilising the resources required to deliver the ceremony and other activities surrounding the historic transition of leadership.
