Three ministers in charge of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives have met journalists and editors in a bid to strengthen collaboration and promote more effective reporting on developments in the sector.
The three Ministers were: Sanjay Tanna: Cabinet Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, David Bahati: Minister of State for Industry, managing industrial growth and technological integration and Alero Tom Aza: Minister of State for Cooperatives, directing cooperative development and local economic empowerment.
The engagement brought together the ministers and members of the media fraternity to discuss ways of improving communication, information sharing and public understanding of government programmes and policies under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives.
The meeting focused on harmonising the relationship between policymakers and journalists, with emphasis on ensuring that media coverage accurately reflects developments, opportunities and challenges affecting Uganda’s trade, industrialisation and cooperative sectors.
The ministers used the engagement to interact directly with editors and reporters, responding to issues of public interest while highlighting the importance of the media in communicating policies and programmes to citizens, businesses, manufacturers, traders and cooperative societies.
Discussions also centred on the need for journalists to have timely access to accurate and relevant information to enable them report on the sector effectively.
The Trade, Industry and Cooperatives sector plays a key role in Uganda’s economic transformation through supporting local manufacturing, promoting trade, strengthening cooperatives and creating opportunities for businesses and entrepreneurs.
The engagement is expected to enhance cooperation between the ministry and media houses, while creating a better understanding of the technical and policy issues that shape the sector.
The meeting also provided an opportunity for journalists and editors to raise concerns about challenges they encounter when covering trade, industry and cooperative-related stories.
The ministers emphasised the importance of continued dialogue with the media as government implements programmes aimed at boosting production, value addition, market access and the growth of cooperatives.
The engagement comes at a time when Uganda continues to pursue industrialisation and increased participation in regional and international trade, making effective communication and informed public debate increasingly important.
