At least one person has died and several others have been injured in multiple crashes along the Kajjansi-Busega section of the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway.
The incidents triggered an emergency response involving expressway management teams and Traffic Police, with responders evacuating injured victims for medical treatment.
According to Kampala-Entebbe Expressway management, the fatal crash involved a pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle near kilometre three of the expressway, close to a sharp bend.
Works and Transport Ministry spokesperson Allan Ssempebwa confirmed that the pedestrian died and that the body was transported to Mulago Hospital Mortuary by police.
“Our emergency response teams have evacuated the victims for further medical attention. And the deceased, as reported, has been taken to Mulago Hospital by Uganda Police,” Ssempebwa said.
Other crashes were reported along the Kajjansi-Busega stretch, leaving several people injured.
The Ministry of Works and Transport said traffic slowed around the affected areas as emergency teams and police worked to clear the scenes and attend to the victims.
“Our emergency response teams together with Traffic Police are attending to multiple crashes along the Kajjansi–Busega section of the Expressway,” the ministry said.
“Traffic is moving slowly around the scene as evacuation and emergency medical response operations continue. Motorists are advised to slow down, follow traffic guidance and exercise patience.”
Following the fatal incident, expressway management renewed warnings against pedestrian access to the high-speed road.
Officials said pedestrians are prohibited from walking or crossing the expressway because motorists may not anticipate people on the road.
“Drivers may not expect pedestrians on the Expressway, which is why it is strictly prohibited to walk or cross there,” management said.
Authorities said they had recently engaged communities living near the expressway and warned residents against cutting, damaging or interfering with the safety fence.
Residents were also cautioned against using unauthorised access points or attempting to cross the expressway outside designated crossing areas.
Neighbouring communities were urged to use approved pedestrian crossing points when accessing areas on either side of the expressway.
Motorists using the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway were urged to observe speed limits, remain alert and exercise extra caution around sharp bends, exit points and other potentially hazardous sections.
Traffic Police and emergency response teams continued working at the affected locations as authorities managed the aftermath of the crashes.
