Mbarara: The ‘chaotic” State Minister for Labour and Industrial Development Mwesigwa Rukutana has been remanded to Kakiika Prison in Mbarara city over a gun incident on Saturday after losing the NRM primary elections.
Rukutana who was arrested last week on September 5, 2020 together with his bodyguards was today September 7, 2020 arraigned before Ntungamo Grade One magistrate Nasifah Namayanja and several charges read to him before being remanded to prison till September 8, 2020 when he will come back to Court.
According to the charge sheets, Mwesigwa Rukutana and others still at large on September,5, 2020 at Kagugu village in Ntungamo district unlawfully attempted to cause the death of Daniel Rweburingi contrary to section 204(a) of the Penal Code Act.
“Minister is charged with assault and causing bodily harm onto one of his victims, threatening violence and malicious damage which he will answer tomorrow September 8, 2020,”charge sheet reads.
The development comes after last week’s NRM party primary elections that were marred with violence and as a result, over nine people were reported dead while over 100 survived with serious injuries.
It is in the same elections that Rukutana turned chaotic following his defeat to Naome Kabasharira, and grabbed a gun from one of his bodyguards and shot in his opponent’s crowd.
Due to the above incidents, President Museveni and NRM party chairman yesterday confirmed via his social media platforms that the former deputy Attorney General will be prosecuted fully with robust charges of assault, attempted murder, murder among others as a punishment for tarnishing party’s image and careless use of authority entrusted to him as a leader.
