The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA), in partnership with AirServ, today hosted the second edition of Girls in Aviation Day 2025 at its Head Office in Entebbe, reaffirming the country’s commitment to bridging the gender gap in the aviation industry.

The colourful event was officially opened by Ms. Olive Birungi Lumonya, UCAA’s Acting Director General and Vice-Chairperson of the African Women in Aviation Association under the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC). In her keynote remarks, Ms. Lumonya underscored the Authority’s dedication to nurturing the next generation of aviation professionals, particularly young women.

“We are intentional about supporting programmes that attract, educate, and empower young people, especially girls, to pursue their dreams in aviation,” she said. “With 32% of our workforce now female, we are determined to continue bridging the gender gap and creating opportunities for the next generation.”

The celebration brought together enthusiastic girls from a diverse range of schools across the country, including Mt. St. Mary’s College Namagunga, Merryland International, Olea Primary School, St. Peter’s S.S, Hope Senior School, St. Mark High School, and Gayaza High School, among others. Throughout the day, the students engaged in inspirational sessions designed to spark interest in aviation careers, offering a platform to learn, connect, and dream beyond traditional career boundaries.

As part of the experiential activities, the girls will later embark on an exclusive tour of a Uganda Airlines Airbus aircraft and explore various airport workstations, gaining firsthand insight into the diverse professional opportunities within the aviation ecosystem—from piloting and engineering to air traffic control and airport management.

The initiative, which aligns with the global Women in Aviation International (WAI) movement, highlights UCAA’s strategic effort to cultivate female participation in a field historically dominated by men. By spotlighting career pathways and mentorship opportunities, the event aims to inspire young Ugandans to take flight—literally and figuratively—towards a future in aviation.

With the resounding success of this year’s celebration, Girls in Aviation Day continues to soar as a beacon of empowerment, proving that the sky is no limit for Uganda’s next generation of female aviators.
