Kampala: Unwanted witness latest score card report indicates that significant Corporate companies still lack compliance to Uganda’s 2019 data protection and privacy Act.
Uganda passed the data protection and privacy Act of 2019 last three years ago.
According to Unwanted Witness researchers, the inconsistent privacy policies across Africa has left consumers vulnerable in countries without strong data protection policies.
The report further shows that in an era of unprecedented data collection and digital surveillance, organisations and companies in Uganda and Africa continue to struggle to keep citizens data safe, putting Africans at risk for fraud, identity theft, discrimination and social and reputations harm.
“We introduced the scorecard to encourage data collectors and processors to adopt protection best practices and to empower Ugandan citizens to demand information pertaining to the ways in which their personal data is being collected and used,” Dorothy Mukasa Executive Director of Unwanted, witness said.
The report assessed 32 most active companies doing business in Uganda e-commerce, financial services, telecoms, insurance, the government, social security and private hospitals.
Companies included; Mtn, Airtel, SafeBoda, Absa bank, Stanbic Bank, Jumia, Maskini, Kikuubo Online and Centenary Bank.
