Uganda, Tanzania Join Hands To Better Environmental & Social Impact Of River Kagera Project

Kampala: Uganda and Tanzania officials signed a joint report on Environmental and social impact assessment after site verification by Delegations from the two countries, of the proposed site on River Kagera in Kikagate -Isingiro District.

The signing ceremony which took place at the Lake View hotel in Mbarara, comprised of NWSC, MWE, NEMA and Isingiro District Local leadership with the NWSC’s Deputy Managing Director-Technical Services, Eng. Johnson Amayo and Director Engineering Services, Eng. Alex Gisagara, as the Uganda Team flag bearers.

After a two-day workshop and field visit to the proposed site, the teams came to a consensus, attaching timelines to all activities.

Part of the general discussion was; that, the amount of water to be abstracted shall depend on the prevailing demand which is currently far below 8cubic liters per sec, the need for a Water source protection for sustainability of the project, the need to put a water gauge extension at the proposed intake to monitor the flow rate of River Kagera, the need to capture the water demand for other projects downstream along the river so as to determine the environmental impact on the flow.

The teams also went on to discuss determination of total demand during dry spells as well as conservation of the entire river catchment.
