The number of Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in Uganda has risen to 329, according to information released by the Ministry of Health on Friday May, 29, 2020, after 12 new infected people were confirmed, with 72 recoveries.

Commenting about the new cases, the Ministry of Health revealed that 5 new cases are truck drivers who arrived from South Sudan via Elegu, while the 7 cases are contacts to previously confirmed cases and all these were under quarantine at the time of test.

“5 new cases are truck drivers who arrived from South Sudan via Elegu”,  7 cases are contacts to previously confirmed cases and all these were under quarantine at the time of test,” the Ministry tweeted.

The Ministry further revealed that 25 positive foreign truck drivers were handed over to their country of origin as a norm being practiced by most East African countries as a way to curb the transmission of the virus from one country to another.

According to the Ministry, Samples from Points of Entry tested were 1,492, However samples from alerts and contacts were 436 while total samples tested today were 1,928.

About the latest update in East Africa, Rwanda has also confirmed three new cases of Coronavirus out of 1,766 people who were tested in the last 24 hours, according to the Ministry of Health.

Rwanda stands at higher chances of defeating the virus given the rapid reduction of the new infections and increased recoveries in the last two weeks, since it has registered 349 COVID-19 cases cumulatively, of which 245 have fully recovered whereas 104 are still in treatment centres without any casualty so far.

Officials reveal that there is still optimism to defeat the pandemic because in the last ten days, all the cases registered by the Ministry of Health were imported from abroad and no community infection has been detected despite the partial opening up of the country that went in force on May 4.

Meanwhile, worldwide COVID-19 cases have since reached 5,858,667, while  the deaths stand at 359,994 deaths and  2,540,977 have recovered.

USA is currently the most affected with 1,760,778 infections and over 102000 deaths of which over 800 were recorded on Thursday.
