President Uhuru Kenyatta has sent out a condolence message to Tanzanians following the death of President John Pombe Magufuli.

The head of state declared a seven-day of national mourning during which the national flag and the flag of East Africa would be flown half-mast.

The East African Community chairperson described Magufuli as a true friend and a visionary ally whose immense leadership will be missed by the international community.

“I have lost a friend, a colleague and a visionary ally. In recognition of his strong legacy, I hereby order and direct the Republic of Kenya to observe seven-day mourning,” he said.

On there other hand, Tanzania Opposition leader Tundu Lissu has said he is ready to return to Tanzania after going into exile in Belgium where he sought asylum.

Lissu left Tanzania after he lost to Magufuli in the hotly contested general election last year claiming his life was in danger.

Meanwhile, a couple of other leaders have eulogized Magufuli among them including the United States of America newly-elected President Joe Biden who has via a statement said that US says remains committed to continuing to support Tanzanians as they advocate for respect for human rights while combating the COVID-19 pandemic.

The brief statement, issued by State Department Spokesperson Ned Price, expresses Washington’s hope that Tanzania can move forward on a democratic and prosperous path.
