The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has officially flagged off its 12th United Nations Guard Unit (UNGU XII) for deployment to Somalia in support of ongoing peace operations.
The ceremony was held at the International Peace and Support Training Center (IPSO-TC) in Ssingo, where senior military leaders urged the troops to uphold discipline, professionalism and patriotism as they embark on the mission.
Presiding over the event, Deputy Commander Land Forces Maj Gen Joseph Ssemwanga reminded the soldiers that they are ambassadors of Uganda and must conduct themselves with integrity.
“You have been prepared for one of the most prestigious missions on the African continent. You are ambassadors of Uganda. The national flag you wear on your uniform is a constant reminder that you are representing your country,” Maj Gen Ssemwanga said.
Drawing from his previous experience as a contingent commander in Somalia, he cautioned the troops about the complex and fluid operational environment, particularly the persistent threat posed by the Al-Shabaab terrorist group. He urged them to remain vigilant and mission-focused at all times.
Maj Gen Ssemwanga also highlighted Pan-Africanism as the guiding principle behind Uganda’s continued involvement in Somalia’s stabilisation efforts. He commended the Commander-in-Chief and the Chief of Defence Forces for strengthening the UPDF and enhancing Uganda’s contribution to regional peace and security.
IPSO-TC Commandant Col Moses Nabaasa confirmed that all pre-deployment training objectives had been successfully completed.
He noted that, for the first time, most of the international core training modules were delivered entirely by UPDF instructors — a milestone that reflects the growing institutional capacity and professionalism of the training centre.
Col Nabaasa urged the soldiers to maintain combat readiness, teamwork and high morale while exercising maximum caution in hostile environments.
He warned against indiscipline, particularly the misuse of alcohol and poor financial management, stressing that professionalism must define their conduct both on and off duty.
“Financial discipline is critical. Spend within your means and remember why you are deployed,” he advised.
Lt Col Nathan Akankunda, Commander of UNGU XII, expressed confidence in the contingent’s preparedness.
“I promise that the Uganda flag will remain high. We shall execute our mandate with professionalism and discipline,” he said.
Local leaders also praised the UPDF for its positive engagement with surrounding communities. Ms Doreen Ayebare, LC1 Chairperson of Kakoola North, commended the force for maintaining strong civil-military relations and supporting residents through medical outreach programmes and other social services.
The flag-off ceremony was attended by senior and junior UPDF officers, as well as members of the local community, marking another chapter in Uganda’s ongoing contribution to peace and stability in Somalia and the wider region.
