Joint forces of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and the Somali National Army (SNA) have captured the strategic town of Darusalam in Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region from the militant group Al-Shabaab.

The operation was carried out by troops serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle extremist strongholds and restore stability in southern Somalia.

Military officials said the capture of Darusalam follows the recent liberation of Mubarak Town, marking another significant step in weakening Al-Shabaab’s presence in the region.

According to Brigadier General Jackson Kayanja, the Sector One Contingent Commander and overall leader of the mission, the success demonstrates the strength of coordinated operations between regional peacekeeping forces and Somali government troops.

“The liberation of Darusalam demonstrates the strength of our forces and our commitment to restoring stability and peace in Somalia,” Brig. Gen. Kayanja said.
Colonel Owiny Akena, Commander of Battle Group 44, noted that securing the town is expected to enhance civilian safety and pave the way for humanitarian assistance and government services to reach communities that have long been affected by insurgent activity.

He added that joint forces will continue maintaining pressure on the militants to prevent them from regrouping or attempting to retake liberated areas.

Local leaders and residents reportedly welcomed the intervention, expressing optimism that the improved security situation will allow economic and social activities to resume in the area.
The latest gains are part of broader regional efforts led by AUSSOM to stabilize Somalia, weaken extremist networks, and support the Somali government in restoring authority across previously contested territories.
