UPL: Express’ Unbeaten Run Halted By UPDF FC

Express FC’s 12-match unbeaten run in the Star-Times Uganda Premier League came to an end on Tuesday evening after their 1-0 loss to army side UPDF FC at the Bombo Military grounds.

UPDF FC forward Alex Kitata rose highest to head home a corner kick and give the hosts the lead on 17 minutes.

Wasswa Bossa’s charges only came close to leveling matters twice in the first half with both incidents being penalty shoutouts, forward Erick Kambale and midfielder Charles Musiige seemed to have been fouled in the forbidden area but center referee Rajab Bakasambe waved both incidents off.

Wasswa Bossa made an immediate substitution at the first half bringing on creative Muzamiru Mutyaba for forwarding Frank Kalanda but fell short with all his attempts. The 55th minute saw the introduction of forwarding Mustafa Kiragga for holding midfielder Yaya Mahad Kakooza but the lanky forward came short too.

The defeat was Express FC’s first of the season and also ended the club’s longest unbeaten run in history (12 games) across all competitions.

The defeat leaves the Red Eagles second on the log on 28 points, two behind new table leaders URA FC and one point (27) ahead of defending league champions Vipers S.C who play on Wednesday.

The Red Eagles will play against Kyetume in their next Star-Times Uganda Premier League game at Wankulukuku on Saturday, March 13th.

Elsewhere, URA beat Police 2-0 to go top of the table with 30 points, thanks to Shafik Kagimu’s 24th-minute opener and Comwell Rwothomio’s 68th banger to make it 2-0 for the tax collectors.

Meanwhile, Bright Anukani’s goal secure all three points for KCCA away to Kyetume while Onduparaka triumphed Against the troubled Mbarara City 1-0 at the green light stadium in Arua Courtesy of Living Kabon’s rebound after missing a penalty spot in the 73rd minute.

The star-Times Uganda Premier League returns on Wednesday with the defending Champions Vipers seeking redemption up against Villa SC at St Mary’s Kitende after their first loss of the season to the Ankole Lions in their previous game in Western Uganda.
