URA Destroys Impounded Goods Worth Shs2.3B

The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) on Tuesday swung into action and burnt contraband cigarettes, cosmetics and soap at Nakasaja Bio hazardous plant, in Wakiso district.

The items had been seized by authority’s enforcement division from various parts of the country from smugglers.

While addressing the media during the exercise, Vincent Sseruuma , the Authority’s mouth piece noted that the contraband cigarettes contained 21metric tones valued at UGX 1.8b, soap contained 38 metric tonnes valued at UGX 498m, and cosmetics contained 33 metric tonnes worth 443m. Sseruuma warned the public specifically business community to execute their work in line with rules and regulations of the land to avoid the long arm of the law.

Agnes Nabwire, assistant URA Enforcement said these kinds of goods are dangerous to human beings and are banned from the importation by the government of Uganda.

David Odur, standards inspector Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS), applauded URA for the action taken against these goods saying that they are to continue collaborating with URA to improve on the quality of all imported and manufactured goods in the country.
