In a decisive move to safeguard Uganda’s tourism reputation, the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) has suspended the operating licences of 18 tour companies over allegations of fraudulent practices.

The suspension, announced in a public notice issued by UTB, takes immediate effect, barring the listed companies from conducting any tourism-related activities as investigations get underway.

Among those affected are several well-known industry names, including;

Makaayi Tours and Travel, Travel Times, Vendoro Safaris, Karumuna Safaris Limited, and Gorilla Holidays (U) Limited. Others on the list include Akia Quest Tours, Saso Uganda Safaris, Primate Journeys Africa, Mohan Tours and Travel, Gotovate Tours and Travel, Dream Bandas Uganda, Birchill Expeditions, Azas Safaris, Dorabo Tours and Travel, Brooklyn Safari, All Budget Gorilla Safaris, Beyond Frontiers Travel, and Varitus Resourcing (U) Ltd.

UTB stressed that the suspensions are temporary, pending the outcome of ongoing investigations.

“The general public is advised to refrain from engaging with the listed companies during this period,” the board stated, cautioning both local and international tourists to seek alternative, licensed operators.

Dr. Simplicious Gessa, UTB’s Public Relations Manager, said the crackdown is part of a broader campaign to restore discipline and integrity within the tourism industry.

“We cannot allow fraudulent operators to tarnish the image of our tourism sector,” Gessa said. “These suspensions are a precautionary measure as we investigate the allegations. Our priority is to protect visitors, ensure value for money, and maintain the integrity of Uganda’s tourism brand.”

This marks the second wave of action against non-compliant operators in as many months, following the suspension of Exclusive Africa Safaris in August over fraud-related concerns.

Industry analysts have welcomed the move, saying it sends a clear signal that malpractice will not be tolerated in one of Uganda’s top foreign exchange-earning sectors.

The tourism industry, which contributes significantly to Uganda’s GDP, has been recovering steadily after the pandemic. Stakeholders say such regulatory interventions are critical to maintaining Uganda’s reputation as a safe and reliable destination for gorilla trekking, wildlife safaris, and adventure tourism.
