Victoria University Slashes Tuition To Enable COVID-19 Hit Students Back To School

Kampala: Uganda’s leading Victoria University in Kampala has further reduced its tuition fees in its efforts to curb the financial-related school dropout cases caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the University’s website, all the new entrants will be required to pay only 50% of the formal tuition whereby a student will pay UGX 938,000 for tuition per semester from UGX 1.7 million and UGX 650,000 in functional fees from UGX. 860,000.

TheSpy Uganda has since learned that the decision stems from a survey carried out between August and September last year involving 10,713 students, which showed that almost 50 percent couldn’t pay tuition resulting from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Addressing the media previous after the Univesity granted scholarships to five lucky needy Ugandans, Univesity Co-Director Mr.Rajiv Ruparelia noted thus; “We know that the current economic situation is not so good, we used this opportunity to give back to the community by adjusting on our fees structure.”

Dr Sudhir Ruparelia the Managing Director Victoria University also noted that as the economy took backstage, Ruparelia Group decided to come out and support the communities by reducing tuition fees to enable every Ugandan to attain a certain level of higher education.

Victoria University Survey About Fees Payments Among Students

“This pandemic is not only for today, it will be here for the next 2 to 3 years so the fees structure will remain stable for a long time to come and we will review it in consultation with students’ body, university council, and the market but I don’t see us raising fees for the next 2-3 years,” Dr. Sudhir explained.

He added that “We want to provide an affordable education because the economic situation of the country is not going to be good so we are going to support our communities”.
