Kampala: After a couple of days Ugandans waking on fresh contradictions on the trending Covidex herbal remedies believed to have been manufactured by Prof. Patrick Ogwang Engeu, who has since been dragged to court by senior International Lawyer George William Alenyo for dozens of accusations, TheSpy Uganda’s investigative reporter, Andrew Irumba Live over the weekend hunted Counsel Alenyo to dig the matter in-depth.

It is from the same interview that we established among others that the machine Prof.Ogwang used in Mbarara University of Science & Technology (MUST) to do his research on Covidex was donated to Uganda by Cuban President Fidel Castro in the 80s making it a government property, not Ogwang’s property which Counsel Alenyo says should be a reason for Covidex to be in hands of government but not Ogwang as a person.
In the same vein, Alenyo wonders why scientists Ogwang inclusive turn up becoming the sole beneficiaries of such inventions yet the government pays full salary to them in their respective universities, funds their activities research inclusive, provide all the required materials on top of granting them full access to government’s equipped laboratories.
”Did you know that Prof.Ogwang is a salaried employee of Government at MUST and he is paid to do teach students and to do research, and his research is funded by Government and they have an agreement that, that research is a property of Government? Having developed this drug in a public institution using government facilities, I strongly believe neither Mbarara University nor Prof.Ogwang owns the patent but the government, and that’s why we have taken both of them to court,” asked Alenyo.
Asked how Prof.Ogwang could be eliminated from the beneficiary cycle yet he is the inventor of the drug, lawyer Alenyo noted that the government can only award Ogwang a certain interest or the President may decide to personally give a handshake (parcel) to him but still not mandatory.
”If Ogwang used the government’s facilities to develop the drug, it means he has an equity and has an interest on the product, but Uganda should be first by considering the taxpayers’ money that has been facilitating his work,” says Alenyo.
Asked why is so much interested in this COVIDEX saga, Alenyo said his leading interest is seeing the drug turned into a public drug since it has been developed through public facilities using Ugandans’ money and that of the president which is still not personal money but for Ugandans.
”President’s money given to these researchers is mine and yours but not his which means every result it yields should be ours together but not Ogwang as a person and that’s why we have sued Attorney General, we want him to tell us why gov’t has failed to own what it funds after turning out positive, that’s wastage of tax payers’ money,” Alenyo furiously noted.
It is from the above background therefore, that lawyer Alenyo revealed to our reporter that he dragged the manufacturer of Covidex herb Professor Patrick Ogwang to court with seeking among others an order that all the monies collected from the drug be surrendered to the government through the consolidated fund.
