Kampala: State Minister of Finance in charge of Investment and Privatization, Ms Evelyn Anite after, recklessly conducting a mass campaign rally in total breach of the COVID-19 Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) with excuses of donating an ambulance, her party Secretary General Kasule Lumumba has called for the arrest of all the concerned parties in the illegal and reckless act likely to spread the virus.

Kasule who this time looked so much disappointed revealed that it is so ashaming that those who should be exemplary, instead are the ones influencing Ugandans to flout the COVID-19 guidelines something risky to people’s lives.

“The Koboko District Police Commander and Regional Police Commander are questionable for all these acts, the more we keep quiet, the more our people will die” said Kasule Lumumba.

In a video clip circulating on various social media platforms, Evelyn Anite held a procession of hundreds of her supporters in Koboko District marching and chanting her name in disregard of measures set by government in prevention of Coronavirus spread. The video has since aroused debate on the impunity by politicians affiliated to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) who have been severally implicated in actions that put lives of Ugandans at risk of contracting Coronavirus.

Anite now joins a list of Health Minister Jane Ruth Aceng, NRM Vice Chairman Eastern Region Mike Mukula and Minister of Justice and Constitutional Ephraim Kamuntu for holding illegal mass gatherings during the lockdown.

The action has also attracted criticism from opposition figures, including Bobi Wine and Dr Kizza Besigye calling Anite’s action provocative and a demonstration of double standards in enforcement of laws since meetings for opposition politicians have on several occasions, dispersed with full force from police.

“Arrogant & highly provocative double standards: NRM/M7 Junta Minister Anite’s campaign procession is OK, while regime opponents can’t even be allowed to talk on FM radios!” Former Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) President, Dr. Kiiza Besigye said.

“As I was being blocked from appearing on a radio, this is what politicians aligned with the regime are doing this! CITIZENS, we must and shall fight on, until all Ugandans are equal in rights and dignity.” Opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) President, Hon Kyagulanyi Sentamu said.

In response Minister Anite on Sunday revealed through her twitter handle that it was not a campaign rally instead the residents were marching to welcome a new ambulance she donated to them.

Minister said “The procession that has been widely viewed on social media was not a campaign rally. I did not organize it & neither did my Team. I was not even there! The spontaneous procession formed on the occasion of the delivery of the Ambulances for Koboko Municipality”
