The Director, AIGP Tom Magambo, has highlighted the growing connection between transnational crime, strategic security and socio-economic development while delivering a lecture to Intake 5 of the National Defence College Uganda (NDC-U).
Magambo’s lecture, titled “Transnational Crime and Drugs,” examined how criminal activities that cross national borders can extend beyond law enforcement concerns to affect national security, economic progress and the wellbeing of communities.
The engagement focused on the relationship between crime and strategic security, with emphasis on how drug-related activities and other forms of transnational crime can create wider challenges for countries seeking to achieve sustainable development.
Magambo also highlighted the broader implications of transnational criminal networks, particularly their potential to undermine social and economic transformation by exploiting weaknesses across borders and creating additional security pressures.
The lecture formed part of the NDC-U’s broader training programme, which brings together senior officers and other participants to examine strategic issues affecting national and regional security.
By linking transnational crime to national development, the engagement underscored the importance of viewing drug trafficking and other cross-border crimes not only as policing matters, but also as strategic challenges requiring coordinated national and international responses.
