National Unity Platform (NUP) members of Parliament Allan Ssewanyana and Muhammad Ssegirinya have further been remanded after Masaka High Court Judge Lawrence Tweyanziza denied them bail.

The Judge further remanded the legislators during their appearance today in court via e-conferencing. Ssewanya was sent to Kigo and Ssegirinya to Luzira prison.

Denying the duo bail, Judge Tweyanziza said that the prosecution proved a likelihood that the duo would interfere with incomplete investigations and probably abscond from Court once released on bail. In fact Judge added that the legislators are a flight risk.

The legislators who have been in jail now for months are battling a couple of charges including; attempted murder, terrorism, murder, abetting terrorism all relating to previous Masaka murders that left over 30 dead.

Remember however that the two legislators weeks back were granted bail but on exiting prison gates were re-arrested by security operatives.

At Court today, the applicants’ legal team led by Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago said it was unfortunate that Justice Tweyaze overturned Justice Nakintu’s ruling who had granted them bail stating that they are going to appeal against his decision.

“We are surprised that the decision made by Justice Nakintu has been overturned. We are going to appeal this decision so that it can be set aside and go unchallenged. We are optimistic that we shall get justice for our clients,” Mr Lukwago said.

Meanwhile, Ssegirinya is on another remand till 29th October 2021 over inciting violence using his Facebook page in 2020. The legislator allegedly posted that he was going to stage a resistance worse than that of the 1994 Rwanda Genocide that left over 800,000 dead most of them being Tutsi.
