World Cup Opener: Ecuador Mercilessly ‘Hammers’ Host Qatar!

Qatar’s 2022 World Cup began with a 2-0 defeat to Ecuador on Sunday.

Ecuador thought they had the perfect start after four minutes as Enner Valencia had the ball in the net but the goal was ruled out following a tight offside call.

However, Ecuador’s dominance from the opening stages continued and Valencia put the South American nation in front from the penalty spot in the 16th minute.

The 33-year-old former West Ham forward then doubled Ecuador’s lead with a brilliant header in the 31st minute.

Qatar had the chance to pull a goal back shortly before half time but Almoez Ali failed to get his header on target from five yards out.

That opportunity turned out to be the closest Qatar came to getting their first World Cup goal as the tournament hosts struggled to trouble Ecuador in the second half.

While a section of Qatar’s fans stayed for the entirety of the game, large swathes of empty seats could be seen at the Al Bayt Stadium as the game progressed.
