Members of the public have been urged to remain vigilant following the proliferation of fraudulent social media handles impersonating King Edward Kijanangoma Nyabongo I.
An official public notice was issued to clarify that the monarch maintains only one official profile on X (formerly Twitter) under the handle @EdwardRukidi.
The warning comes after fake accounts, including a commentary profile under the handle @kijjanangomaed, were identified operating online and misleading followers. The public is advised to ignore and disregard any statements or interactions originating from unauthorized social media pages claiming to represent the King.
How To Easily Detect A Fake Social Media Account
With online impersonation on the rise, staying alert can protect you from scam attempts, misinformation, and identity theft. Here are key indicators to help you identify fraudulent profiles:
Mismatched Usernames and Bio Category: Impostor profiles often use slight variations in spelling or add extra letters to handle names. Additionally, watch for inappropriate account labels, such as a official figure’s profile labeled as a “Commentary account” or categorized under “Entertainment”.
Discrepancies in Verification and Handles: Official public figures typically maintain simple, verified handles matching their real identity. Fake accounts frequently use irregular combinations of letters or numbers in their @ tag to mimic the original.
Uncharacteristic Content and Tone: Pay close attention to what the account posts. If a profile claiming to belong to a public or royal figure posts commentary on unrelated subjects such as sports scores, casual opinions, or suspicious third-party links it is likely fraudulent.
Creation Dates and Account History: Check when the profile joined the platform. Recent registration dates paired with high posting frequency or unusual follower-to-following ratios are major red flags.
Inconsistent Mutual Followers: Authentic public accounts are usually followed by verified figures, official institutions, or recognized media personnel. Fake profiles often lack connections to local or credible entities.
