The Bank of Uganda (BoU) has officially issued an operating license to Pearl Bank Uganda Limited, formerly PostBank Uganda, marking a major milestone in the institution’s transformation and rebrand journey.

The license was handed to the Bank’s Managing Director, Mr. Julius Kakeeto, by the Governor of the Bank of Uganda, Dr. Michael Atingi-Ego, a symbolic step that confirms the institution’s full transition from PostBank to Pearl Bank Uganda Limited.

The approval follows the Bank’s five-year transformation strategy, which began with its elevation to a Tier 1 Commercial Banking License in December 2021.

Dr. Atingi-Ego congratulated the institution on its rebrand and praised its commitment to financial innovation, noting the impact of the Wendi mobile wallet, which he said has significantly expanded access to financial services for Ugandans. “The bank has done great things in supporting financial inclusion especially through its Wendi mobile wallet,” he remarked.

With the new license, the Bank of Uganda will continue to supervise Pearl Bank to ensure it operates securely and meets all regulatory standards, thereby strengthening public trust and supporting stable economic growth. The rebrand is central to Pearl Bank’s corporate strategy aimed at driving profitability for a government-owned institution while delivering social and economic impact, particularly through sustainable financial inclusion and support for SMEs involved in value addition, especially in agriculture.

Pearl Bank’s history stretches back nearly a century. It began as the Post Office Savings Department in 1926 before becoming PostBank Uganda Limited in 1998 following its separation from Uganda Posts and Telecommunications Corporation.

Under the leadership of Mr. Kakeeto, appointed in October 2019, the Bank has undergone extensive reforms. These include branch network expansion, digital transformation, strengthened agency banking, and a deeper presence among local enterprises.

A major milestone came in 2023 with the launch of Wendi, a digital financial platform that enables savings, money transfers, utility payments, international remittances, and SACCO empowerment. The platform has brought banking closer to everyday Ugandans, underscoring the Bank’s commitment to inclusive, accessible, and impactful financial services.

Pearl Bank has registered strong financial performance over the past five years, with consistent growth in profitability and balance sheet size. In May 2025, the then PostBank Uganda was recognized by the Bank of Uganda as the Overall Best Performing Bank under the Small Business Recovery Fund (SBRF) and Agricultural Credit Facility (ACF). In September 2025, it also earned Sustainability Certification from the European Organisation for Sustainable Development.

The institution officially announced its intent to rebrand to Pearl Bank Uganda Limited in June 2025, a name inspired by Uganda’s global identity as the Pearl of Africa.

The new license and brand identity align with the Bank’s tagline, Grow. Prosper., a condensed version of its purpose of fostering prosperity for Ugandans. With a refreshed brand, ongoing innovation, and increasing nationwide impact, Pearl Bank Uganda Limited is positioning itself as a vital player in expanding inclusive banking and supporting Uganda’s economic transformation for generations to come.
