A family in Kampala is demanding answers after their relative, identified as Sheebah, popularly known as Karma Bae, died last week at Mulago National Referral Hospital, where she had been rushed in critical condition.

According to the family, Sheebah was admitted in a coma, and relatives hoped that the referral facility would offer immediate, life-saving intervention. Instead, they allege that the attending medical personnel insisted on following routine hospital protocols, including a first-come, first-serve system, despite the patient’s deteriorating state.

Relatives claim they waited for nearly four hours without receiving the urgent attention they expected. During that time, they say, Sheebah’s condition worsened until she eventually passed away as doctors “looked on.”

Sheebah was laid to rest on Sunday.

Family members and community voices have pointed to her death as another example of the systemic weaknesses in Uganda’s public health sector, issues often linked to understaffing, resource gaps, and corruption. They argue that lives continue to be lost unnecessarily and allege that patients who fail to offer informal payments often receive delayed or inadequate treatment.

Mulago Hospital has not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident.

The family says they are considering seeking justice to ensure no other family goes through a similar ordeal.
