Kampala: Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among has urged leaders to be champions of tree-planting campaigns in order to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change.

Among made the appeal while chairing the plenary sitting on Thursday noting that “the country and the region at large has been witnessing rapid environmental and climatic changes occasioned by among others; increased deforestation, pollution and general environmental and swamp degradation among others.”

“I have previously emphasized the need for climate change mitigation through tree planting, responsible environment and natural resource use amongst others. Today, I reiterate my call for all of you to champion environment conservation in your respective localities,” Among stated.

With the return of the rains, she urged leaders, especially MPs to lead tree planting campaigns in their constituencies.

“I will be communicating plans by the Parliamentary Commission for a robust nationwide tree planting campaign,” she said.

Across the globe, several countries have been ravaged by climate change with the neighboring South Sudan recently closing schools due to excessive heat that had reached over 40 degrees Celsius.

“As you may be aware, the annual Kabaka Birthday run is slated for 7th April 2024. Proceeds from this run will aid interventions against HIV/AIDS. The Parliament of Uganda will support and participate in the Kabaka Birthday Run. On Tuesday, I will lead a team of Members to Mengo at the invitation of the Katikkiro to formally submit our support,” Among said in a post via her X account on Thursday.
