Police in Bujuuko, Mpigi district, on Tuesday intercepted thugs who had robbed people in Kawempe division of several mobile phones and other valuable properties.

The arrest followed a phone call from officers at Lugoba Police, Kawempe division, who alerted all stations across the country that thugs had robbed residents in their area and fled heading to Mityana Road.

The OC Bujuuko together with LDUs responded immediately and intercepted the said thugs as they proceeded towards Nswanjere LCI and Jezza where they were rounded up.

Kampala Metropolitan spokesperson Patrick Onyango revealed that the thugs were intercepted in a motor vehicle Toyota Allex registration number UBE 641A, in which they were traveling.

However, one of the thugs took off although one was arrested. The thug who was arrested was identified as Allan Ggayi, a resident of Kyanja, Gayaza in Wakiso district, while the one who fled is Tonny Ssozi, a resident of Entebbe Road. When cops searched the vehicle they recovered over 160 mobile phones.

Oyango said; ”It has since been established that these thugs were targeting mobile money agents by pretending that they are either withdrawing or depositing money and in the process they would exchange their phones with the agent or steal the agent’s phone without the agents’ knowledge.”
He revealed that Ggayi was transferred to Kawempe Police station and the likely charges to be levied against him are robbery and theft.

Police has since intensified the  hunt for for Ssozi who is on the run as investigations to discover who these thugs have been dealing with around Kampala and surrounding areas continue.

Police vowed that with the arrest of these thugs, the detectives will make sure they dig deeper so that all the rackets of thugs and businessmen who deal in stolen mobile phones in Kampala are apprehended.
