Kampala, Uganda- The future of journalism hangs in the balance, and artificial intelligence (AI) may be its only lifeline. This was the key message delivered by Prof. Lawrence Muganga, Vice Chancellor of Victoria University, during his keynote address at the Broadcast & Digital Media Convention in Kampala.

Speaking passionately at the event, Prof. Muganga warned media professionals that the traditional newsroom model is at a crossroads.

“The newsroom must evolve or dissolve!” he declared, emphasizing the urgent need for media houses to adapt to the digital age.

He dismissed the common fear that AI threatens journalism, asserting instead that “AI isn’t the enemy—it’s the upgrade.” Prof. Muganga urged broadcasters, journalists, and digital content creators to embrace AI tools to enhance speed, accuracy, and relevance in the fast-evolving media landscape.

According to him, failing to do so would mean risking obsolescence in a world where real-time information and digital innovation are redefining how stories are told and consumed.

“The media must embrace AI to stay relevant, fast, and accurate in today’s digital era. Journalism must transform or risk extinction,” he added.

The convention brought together leading media stakeholders from across the region, including representatives from NBS TV, New Vision, NTV Uganda, UBC, and NTV Kenya, to discuss the future of journalism in a tech-driven world.

Victoria University’s engagement in shaping the media discourse underscores its growing role as a thought leader in education and innovation. Victoria University built a State-of-the-art AI driven studio at the university for its journalism students.
