President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), has promoted 301 General, Senior and Junior Officers in one of the latest military leadership reshuffles aimed at strengthening the command structure of the national army.
The promotions, announced by the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, also include the confirmation of 83 officers who had been serving in acting capacities to their substantive ranks. Additionally, 89 Second Lieutenants who had been on probation have been confirmed as full Lieutenants.
Among the senior-most officers elevated in the latest promotions is Ag. Maj. Gen. Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga, whose rank has been confirmed as Major General.
Five Brigadiers have also been promoted to the rank of Major General. They are Brig. Gen. Godwin Karugaba, Brig. Gen. Chris Musinguzi Bagonza, Brig. Gen. Michael Nyarwa, Brig. Gen. Richard Karemire and Brig. Gen. David Robert Gonyi.
According to the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, the promotions and rank confirmations are intended to strengthen leadership across all levels of the UPDF and ensure continuity in executing the Force’s constitutional mandate of defending Uganda’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Military promotions are a key aspect of the UPDF’s leadership development and command structure, recognizing officers’ service, experience and responsibilities while ensuring the force remains operationally effective.
The Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, together with the UPDF, congratulated all the officers who received promotions and confirmations, wishing them success as they assume their enhanced responsibilities in service to the country.
The latest promotions come as the UPDF continues to play a central role in national security, regional peacekeeping operations and the implementation of Uganda’s broader defence and security objectives.
