Mukono Municipality Chokes On Garbage, Faces Cholera Risk

Mukono, Uganda: People living within and around Mukono municipality are facing a huge cholera risk because the municipality is choking on heaps of decomposing garbage.

District officials at the Municipality reveal that they need over Shs1Bn to be able to collect the garbage from various dumping centers and dispose it off properly using a recycling plant. Since 2008, there have been plans of constructing a plant that will help address waste management in the municipality but the plan has never materialized. The garbage recycling plant was valued one billion shillings but the municipality has never received the money. Sources reveal that in the first phase of the project, over Shs600M was used to acquire 8 acres of land at Katikolo village, infrastructure and labour. But that is all they have ever done. George Fred Kagimu, the Mayor Mukono Municipality, says that when the recycling plant is constructed, garbage will be recycled into manure and will enable the municipality maintain a clean town.

Kagimu notes that the Municipality plans to request the government to avail the funds for the garbage recycling plant in the financial year 2019/2020.
