National Resistance Movement (NRM) National Female Youth MP aspirant for 2026–2031, Ms Mercy Kanyesigye, has urged the party leadership to set new dates for the suspended youth elections.

The elections, which included positions for the NRM Youth League and Youth MPs, were suspended on August 27 by President Yoweri Museveni following chaotic scenes during the Delegates’ Conference at Kololo. Other elections proceeded as planned, but the youth polls were left pending.

In a statement issued this evening, Ms Kanyesigye commended delegates who travelled from different parts of the country to take part in the process, noting the financial and personal sacrifices many had made. She said it was important that their efforts were recognised by giving them an opportunity to elect their leaders.

“Their sacrifices should not go in vain,” she said. “It is only fair that the party announces new dates for the suspended elections to ensure delegates complete their mandate.”

Political observers noted that Ms Kanyesigye’s remarks reflected a conciliatory approach, balancing support for the party with a call for accountability to its youth members.
NRM has not yet announced when the postponed elections will be held. Party officials say consultations are ongoing to determine the way forward.
