Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia, one of Uganda’s most prominent business magnates, has come out to strongly disown an X (formerly Twitter) account falsely impersonating him and misleading the public with fabricated claims, including several posts about the death of his son, Rajiv Ruparelia.
In a confirmation message to Spy Uganda jotted to it’s senior Editor Andrew Irumba, Dr. Sudhir clarified that the account in question — using the handle @RupareliaSudhi and bearing his photos — is entirely fake and not affiliated with him in any way.
“This account is fake. I don’t know who is behind it or what their intentions are,” Dr. Sudhir said. “But it is clear they are using my image and name to mislead the public.”
The fake account has attracted over 21,000 followers and has been actively making emotional and dramatic posts — including those mourning Rajiv Ruparelia’s death and announcing major business deals. Some of these posts have gone viral, with several unsuspecting media outlets quoting them as genuine without verification.
Dr. Sudhir also warned the public and his business partners to beware of other similar scams — including recent attempts to use AI-generated videos of him to defraud unsuspecting individuals and institutions.
He emphasized the need for due diligence and verification, especially in an era where AI and impersonation schemes are increasingly common online.
Media Urged To Uphold Ethical Standards
The incident has stirred concern over the laxity of media verification processes in the digital era. Andrew Irumba, who also serves as President of the Independent Online Journalists Association (INDOJA-U), criticized the failure of some outlets to fact-check before publishing.
“This is dangerous and reckless,” Irumba said. “It’s unfortunate that some media houses have picked content from this fraudulent account and attributed it to Dr. Sudhir without any verification. That’s against the core principles of journalism.”
Irumba emphasized the need for journalists to verify sources and avoid amplifying disinformation that could have serious reputational or emotional consequences.
“Let all and sundry know: that X account is fake, and I urge everyone — including journalists — not to fall for it,” he warned.
