Police in Katwe-Kabatoro Division, under the Rwenzori East Region, have launched an investigation into the tragic death of a fisherman who was attacked and killed by a crocodile while illegally fishing in Lake Edward.

According to a statement issued by SP Nelson Tumushime, the spokesperson for Rwenzori East Region Police, the deceased has been identified as Mumbere Andres, a 30-year-old resident of Rwenjubu Cell, Rwenjubu Ward, in Katwe-Kabatoro Town Council.
Preliminary reports indicate that on April 18, 2025, at around 12:00 p.m., Mr. Andres went fishing using the hooking method along the shores of Lake Edward. Unbeknownst to him, he had entered a designated breeding zone for crocodiles and hippos—an area known to be highly dangerous.

During the fishing activity, a large crocodile reportedly attacked and dragged him into the water. Police Marine units promptly responded and, after hours of searching, managed to recover partial remains of the deceased at approximately 2:00 a.m. However, his arms and one leg had been severely mutilated, presumed to have been consumed by the crocodile.

Authorities have issued a strong caution to local fishermen, urging them to avoid fishing in restricted breeding zones along Lake Edward. The Police Marine Unit will continue to conduct regular patrols to deter illegal fishing activities. Fishermen who are found violating safety and environmental guidelines will face arrest and prosecution.
The police extend their condolences to the family of the deceased and reiterate the importance of adhering to safety regulations when accessing the lake.
