Five Shot Dead, Scores Injured As Police disperse Bobi Wine’s Supporters In Mukono

Mukono: As Police were trying to block the National Unity Platform (NUP) Presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine from proceeding to Buikwe district for campaigns, traffic got paralyzed amidst running battles between security officers with NUP supporters.

Commenting on the scuffle, police said Bobi Wine is not allowed to move with all the 15 cars he is moving with for campaigns due to the strict guidelines of ministry of health on COVID-19.

Shortly after Police’s communication, National Unity Platform (NUP) party revealed that during the scuffle, police shot dead five of their supporters who were on Kyagulanyi’s campaign trail.

“Just after our campaign meeting in Nakifuma earlier this morning, police has fired live bullets to our supporters leaving five of them dead. Many have succumbed to serious injuries when police trucks drove and knocked them down,” NUP posted on Facebook post

Meanwhile, in Mukono other six NUP supporters were involved in a serious motor accident, it is reported that the six supporters were travelling in a super custom vehicle which overturned and the victims were rushed to Kawolo hospital in Lugazi municipality in critical condition.

According to witnesses, the van crashed in the middle of a sugarcane plantation at Nagojje where police diverted NUP presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi’s convoy from accessing the major trading centres of Mayangayanga, Namataba and Kayanja.

According to Benard Ssempaka a supporter of NUP, four of the injured people are currently in the intensive care unit. He added that they are currently attended to by health workers although they are still in comma state of life.

One of the survivors, Margret Ssimbwa the wife of the Nakifuma County NUP flagbearer Fred Ssimbwa, says the driver lost control after police fired tear gas to stop them from following Kyagulanyi.

“The road is too slippery, it needed driving with a lot of care but after police firing teargas, the driver lost control making the vehicle overturn,” said Ssimbwa. As we report this, there is slow traffic flow after police mounting roadblocks along Kampala-Jinja road to prevent Kyagulanyi supporters from proceeding with the journey.
