President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has announced that the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) will hold village-level elections and register verification exercises on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, across the country.

In a statement issued Saturday evening, the President directed all NRM members to report to their respective village centers by 10:00 AM to participate in two crucial exercises: the verification of NRM membership registers and the election of NRM LCI flag-bearers and village structures. The activities are to run strictly between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM, as guided by the NRM Electoral Commission.
“I will personally be in Rwakitura village and Maama will be in Ntungamo Ireenga to take part in the verification of our respective NRM village registers,” Museveni said. However, he emphasized that he would remain neutral during the elections, stating, “As Chairman of the NRM, I welcome any choice of our members. I cannot and should not, therefore, take sides.”

The party’s roadmap kicked off on April 24 with the expression of interest and nomination for LC1 chairpersons and village party structure officials. It covers the period from April 2025 through February 2026 and outlines a series of internal party processes starting from grassroots elections and leading up to the nomination of presidential candidates and the general election.

Key dates on the roadmap include:
• May 6, 2025: Election of LC1 flag bearers and village party structure officials.
• July 16, 2025: NRM primaries for parliamentary candidates.
• July 24, 2025: NRM primaries for LCV chairpersons, mayors, and councilors.
• August 18, 2025: Elections for LCIII chairpersons and councilors.
• October 2–3, 2025: Nomination of presidential candidates.
• January 12 – February 9, 2026: National polling period for President, MPs, and local government councils.
The roadmap also earmarks timeframes for nomination of local government and parliamentary candidates by the Electoral Commission, internal party delegate conferences, and open campaign periods.
