President Vladimir Putin hosted Burkina Faso’s President Ibrahim Traoré in Moscow this week, reaffirming growing ties between the two nations during high-level talks held alongside commemorations of the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

The Russian delegation included Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak, Defence Minister Andrei Belousov, and other top officials—underscoring the importance Moscow places on its relationship with Ouagadougou.

President Putin praised President Traoré’s attendance at the commemorations, calling it a symbolic gesture that reflects the deepening partnership. He highlighted Burkina Faso’s historical contribution to the fight against Nazism, noting that approximately 30,000 Burkinabe soldiers fought in Free France units during World War II.

Today, Putin said, Russia and Burkina Faso are united in the battle against terrorism and extremism. “We will continue supporting Burkina Faso in restoring constitutional order and suppressing radical groups,” he stated.

Since the reopening of the Russian Embassy in Ouagadougou in late 2023, bilateral relations have strengthened. Russia has doubled its education scholarships for Burkinabe students for the 2024–2025 academic year, with 27 additional placements supported by the federal budget. Over 3,500 Burkinabe students have been educated in Russia to date.

Plans to expand this academic cooperation include potential university partnerships and the establishment of Russian university branches in Burkina Faso. President Traoré emphasized this need, stating, “Our fundamental objective is to develop Burkina Faso through science, engineering, and education.”

Economic and humanitarian cooperation is also growing. Russia shipped 25,000 tonnes of wheat to Burkina Faso last year and is preparing further food aid this month. A new intergovernmental commission is being formed to explore trade, health, and technological collaboration. Russia also plans to support scientific research, healthcare development, and laboratory infrastructure in Burkina Faso.

In his remarks, President Traoré called Russia a resilient global power and praised its continued relevance despite international sanctions. “We want our cooperation to grow exponentially,” he said, calling for deeper engagement in defence, education, and technological transfer.

Both leaders expressed commitment to continued collaboration in international forums and through the newly established format of consultations between Russia and the Confederation of Sahel States.

“Our prospects are good across many areas,” Putin concluded, “and we have an opportunity to discuss them in detail today.”
