HE. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has issued another warning to the western world not to dare involve Uganda in issues to do with homosexuality.

Addressing members of Parliament on Thursday at Kololo Independence Grounds, Museveni noted that it’s wrong for western countries to threaten to impose sanctions on those who are opposed to homosexuality yet it should be the other way round.

He noted, “on the issue of homosexuals, we shall get the time and discuss the matter thoroughly. Homosexuals are deviations from normal. Is it by nature or by nurture? We need to answer those questions. We need a medical opinion on that.”

Museveni said sex in Uganda and other countries in Africa is confidential and that it should remain the same.

“The western countries should stop wasting the time of humanity by imposing their social practices on us. Sex is confidential, so why should the public know whether you are a homosexual or not unless you pronounce yourself,” he said adding;

“Here to marry within the clan is taboo. Should we impose sanctions on them for marrying relatives? So, we should put sanctions on those who are marrying their cousins in other parts of the world. If they are marrying their cousins that is their problem.”

Museveni’s statements come a few weeks after lawmakers introduced an anti-homosexuality bill that would allow the jailing of homosexuals for up to 10 years.

The text of the bill says it “seeks to protect the cherished culture of the people of Uganda” and its traditional family values against “the acts of sexual rights activists seeking to impose their values of sexual promiscuity on the people of Uganda.”

Anita Among, Uganda’s parliament speaker, stated reasons why the country needs the law.

“For us, it’s about our morals and our culture. And I want to urge members of parliament, please don’t get intimidated. Never get intimidated, we are doing all of this for humanity,” Among said.

Legislator Asuman Basalirwa read the goals of the bill: “Criminalization of homosexuality, with a liability of imprisonment of two to ten years, for committing homosexuality, aggravated homosexuality, attempted homosexuality, aiding and abetting homosexuality, conspiracy to commit homosexuality and related practices.”
