The FUFA Big League club Ndejje University FC edged Sports club Villa 1-0 in the first leg of the Stanbic bank Uganda Cup on Monday at Bombo Military Barracks grounds.
Brian Ssali’s 37th-minute goal was enough to give the visitors a crucial victory as they face off again in the second leg at the arena of Visions in Luweero later this week to determine who goes to the next round.
Ndejje University lions will not have midfielder Nicholas Luzige in the second leg after he was shown a red card in the 65th minute after a second bookable.
Villa pressed for an equalizer with a number of opportunities but they failed to convert them giving the visitors a huge victory at the end of the 90 minutes of regulation.
This was the lions’ first win this season having drawn in all the three FUFA Big League games they have played so far. They drew 0-0 with Nyamityobora, 1-1 with Terrazo and Tiles FC and 1-1 with Kigezi Home Boyz in their last game.
This year’s Stanbic bank Uganda Cup is a little different due to the Covid-19 pandemic which forced FUFA to start the competition at the round of 32 with only Star-Times Uganda Premier League clubs and FUFA Big League clubs taking part in the competition.
On contrary, this year’s tournament will be played on a home and away basis for the first time except for the finals.
