Wasswa Bbosa Registers First Win As Express Head Coach

By Brian Bariyo Tumuramye

Ten-man Express FC registered their first-ever victory over Onduparaka FC on Friday afternoon.

The Red Eagles who had not beaten the Caterpillars on all seven previous occasions scraped to a 1-0 victory at the Green Light Stadium in Arua.

Despite seeing Lawrence Kigonya sent off early in the second half, substitute Frank Ssenyondo would ensure Wasswa Bbosa gets his maiden three points on return to coaching Express, as he scored the only goal of the contest.

This was the first game for Express head coach Bbosa, who replaced sacked George Ssimwogerere barely three days ago.

The Red Eagles endured the final 33 minutes of the game with a man down following a sending off for Lawrence Kigonya with a second bookable offence in the 57th minute.

Having earlier received a yellow card for walking off the pitch without the referee’s consent, Kigonya would be booked for the second time early in the second half after a clumsy challenge and given his marching orders.

The red card led to a forced change on the hour mark when offensive midfielder Isaac Doka was replaced with the holding midfielder Dennis Sserukwaya.

The Catarpillars called off Kakooza for striker Amis Muwonge with a change in strategy to capitalize on the numerical advantage.

The visitors however remained the dominant side with countless raids to the Onduparaka goal.

Express forward Eric Kambale, returning after a long period, out-flipped the ball past Onduparaka goalkeeper Yusuf Wasswa but defender Muhammed Rashid reacted to tame the danger with 17 minutes to play.

Sabir Andama replaced Jamal Malish in the 80th minute before left full back Rashid Okocha was cautioned for dangerous play and the diminutive winger made no mistake with a low drive past goalkeeper Wasswa for the goal well celebrated.

The three points earned see Express climb out of the relegation zone and into 11th. The Red Eagles now have 24 points from 21 games and Onduparaka, they remain 5th with 30 points so far this season and Onduparaka will visit SC Villa on February 19 as Express will visit Maroons in the Uganda Cup before a home fixture against Tooro United in the League.
